At the start, I will agree that the film is not able to grasp attention immediately. But once it does, you will find yourself trapped in a world of imagination and mindblowing concepts. The soul will challenge you to think about mysteries of life which you might have never considered.
Soul tells the journey of a middle class music teacher, Joe Gardner, who loves jazz. Gardner is head over heels for an opportunity to launch his career in the music industry. One day, he comes across an audition where a jazz icon Dorothea Williams is looking for a vocalist for her band. Gardner is highly skilled in music, so, he attends the audition fully confident.
In his eagerness to see his role through, he runs home but eventually falls down into a construction hole. At this stage, he has significantly reached the end of his life, defined by his spirit standing in line for the Great Beyond. Motivated by the prospect of getting his job and denying death right in front of him, he somehow gets to the Great Before. He is shown the highlights of his life decisions and events which culminated during his time on Earth. In this specific moment from the afterlife and before life, Gardner goes through his memories from an outside perspective. The moment of nostalgia makes him realize that he actually had sobered life, but sadly never valued the beauty of the small things.
As you may grasp from my brief summary of the film, this movie is particularly timely for the transition into 2021, and hopefully out of the epoch of Covid-19 and lockdowns. As we all know quarantine has served the purpose to in fact re-evaluate our pre-pandemic lives and seems to have left a lot of us wondering what went wrong.
This film taught me multiple valuable lessons that provided me with lots of guidance for the new year. Moving forth, I will keep in mind some essential rules such as: live in the moment appreciate the little things, and never take anything for granted because today could be your last day. Most importantly, I learned how to chase after my dreams and do what I love to do, as only then do I feel truly fulfilled.
