Yay! It’s another low-budget film The Asylum. Yes, the company that brought us shark-tail movies has low-budgeted Tomb Invader, which is poorly made to tribute wait for it Tomb Raider! What’s more preposterous is their attempt to release it a week before the incredible Alicia Vikander’s film was set to premiere. Am I the only one who is jaw-dropped at The Asylum’s marketing strategy?
If you do not know, I am a massive follower of greedy game marketers oh excuse me, I meant The Asylum. From Sharknado to Nymphos Versus Sativa, The Asylum is known for its whale of a time killer-fish flicks. Avengers Grimm, Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies, and Hercules Reborn are all iconic and bluntly absurd, but that’s what makes me adore this company its amazing mockbuster churn.
Unlike Tomb Raider, where the ancestor of Lara Croft had a muddled storyline that revolved around a prominent businessman, his daughter, and a skillful myth; this film revolves around an archaeologist. A denial gets picked up by a life-changing mysterious billionaire and set to find an ancient Chinese treasure. Just like how her mother had before disappearing from thin air in the opening scenes.
The Tomb Raider sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider was led by actress Gina Vitori who played the role of the archaeologist named Alabama Channing. She reminded me of Alicia Vikander and so much of the Lara Croft on Tomb Raider was inspired by her. Considering her performance, which seems not to depict even a hint of danger or fright something that is definitely expected of a treasure hunter in unknown maw caves I am fairly certain it was her face that got her the role this time. The rest of the cast is rounded out by a bunch of non-descript, generic, characters the only one memorable is Nathan, a parody of Nathan Drake of the Uncharted franchise.
Correct, this is simply not a spoof of Tomb Raider. The Asylum also uses the treasure hunter concept as a form of parody for the Uncharted video game series and for Indiana Jones. This particular spoof is probably the best value for money ever. A veritable nest of cinematic homages because why work on just one when you can do multiple all at once. Some people have totally forgot the Atlantic Rim and Transmorphers. That’s for sure.
This is less tomb raiding as it is ‘running around the woods of Los Angeles. Tomb Invader is more of a return to The Asylum’s roots as beggars can’t be choosers in terms of originality. If it is your thing (and it sure is mine), you will like a lot of this film.
