Dearly Departed is not a standard musical. For one, there is an exceptionally gifted female-led team and two, there are ghosts. Mix Waitress and The Sixth Sense together, and you’ve got Martin and Bartlett’s new short.
Having recently completed an incredibly successful international festival run, Dearly Departed has already collected several Short Film prizes such as ‘Best International Film’ at Carolina Fear Fest or ‘Best Short Film’ and ‘Best Writing’ at Sick Chick Flicks to mention only few.
Vera, being in a house full of ghosts, learns how to manage her relationship with the living and the dead while realizing what she really wants in life and love.
This astonishing masterpiece from Martin and Bartlett is a fantasy that the film industry has never seen before. A blend of different genres like awe-inspiring movie collections, different tones, and spirits fail to capture the vision fusion of musicals and horror beauty. The Dearly Departed charming and stunning short film is a perfect appointment. At once, Fletcher’s essence captivates us. From the start, we see Fred who is already hopelessly in love with only Vera (Betty Danville). But the spirits residing in the house certainly can’t stand the idea of her being able to go somewhere which she surely is not prepared to do, or letting go of all. Now supported by her ‘dearly departed’ friends she does put in place one way to get what she wants and ultimately cruelly gets to love.
The effects and cinematography of the film Dearly Departed are some of the most successful elements of its production when combined with the handpicked camera angles and set design, The film was able to have some sentimental moments indeed, the strawberry on the cake was icing on the cake. Not to forget the original music which combines with the storytelling in the movie beautifully. It helped in moving through Vera and Fred’s when the relationship was shifting. Also, there is a beautiful palette of colors as well. The soothing vintage-style pastel tones of the wire palette brighten Vera’s home, thus creating a wonderful place for Vera and her deceased friends. Adding strength to the film is the young and talented quintet of actors of Dearly Departed. William Paul, Olivia Warren, and Sean Kilty are now joining Danville and Spear as the musically melancholic spirits.
Despite containing these positive attributes, the picture does not fully capture the essence of cheerfully wickedness. There is some room for improvement such as the fact that the lighting is at times presented in the opposing tone to the scenes it is supposed to accompany. Sometimes there is too much or too little highlight on the setting and the actors. It should be noted that this is a minor flaw that does not take away from the captivating narrative.
Dearly Departed shows just how Martin, Bartlett, and their team are some of the top emerging filmmakers. With only 13 minutes of running time, the movie proves that writing can be fresh, funny, and wholesome at the same time, all while having original evil twists that make the movie even more stunning. The amount of effort used to create this stunning production is proof of its own.
