This short focuses on one of my favorite subgenres psychological horror. The combination of spine-chilling scenes and heart-pounding suspense is immensely appealing to the audience as it keeps them on the very edge. The Elevator as simplistic as it is, is effective in its own way. Director Toni V. Genov decided to avoid dialogue and had a single location, which added an eerie and vogue quality to the film. This short horror was brilliant in showcasing the underground subcultures on the dark web and exposing those who take pleasure in witnessing fear.
As for The Elevator, it is very promising and it can most certainly be expanded into a full-length feature because of its open-ended nature. As with most directors, there are many routes the director can choose to take which has been explained by Toni V Genov. He has stated his plans of linking this particular short to one of his other projects, 2088, which is a good idea as there is a lot of potential for this piece. In my opinion, what is wonderful about a good horror film is you do not need a convoluted and intricate plot and backstory to rationalize it.
The entire audience feels as if they have been placed in the middle of the action and that is the only thing that needs our utmost concern. The protagonist gets into an elevator that malfunctions and leaves him stuck for several hours, with no communication, no food, no water, and no signal. He is then greeted by an automated voice that states, “Supplies will be sent down.” Only these ‘supplies’ will lead him to a gruesome fate instead.
The primary twist of having a great fear of being locked in a small space is certainly the cherry on top. Most people can imagine themselves in this kind of horror scenario because it preys on our most basic fears which is the reason why it is so effective. The protagonist suffers from claustrophobia and as this fear mounts, the audience relates to the sweat-inducing situation. The tale concluded with a twist which was both great and disappointing at the same time as it was satisfying to see the twist, but the audience was robbed of the true fate of the protagonist. Undoubtedly, the ending was brilliant as it plays on a lot of modern-day fears.
It dives into a subculture that consists of vile and sadistic individuals who mask themselves behind a screen and take pleasure in watching suffering, violence, and death unfold before them.
For those interested, The Elevator is a great piece to watch if you are interested in low-budget horror as there are high-quality horror shorts. There were parts of the film that were rather strange and left the viewer with more questions than answers, so it made you want to watch more. A must-see!
