To me, Avengers Grimm had a certain peculiar charm, and while it was detached from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the Avengers Infinity War dominating the box office, it is not surprising that The Asylum is still trying to cash in. Still, one cannot shake off the feeling that this has been driven to the ground. Even though the new cast and director attempted to do something more experimental, most of the first half was shockingly slow and difficult for the audience to sit through.
Magda (Maya), queen of Atlantis is the villainess here. She emerges from the ocean with what appears to be an army of soldiers well, there are at least four of them. Any more appear through not-so-nice digital copy-and-paste. Magda is in search of Prince Charming (Marcel). Like if he could be persuaded to marry her, she would become the ruler of the land and sea. Looking for him is an organization of fairy tale threats, which was created by Alice (Licciardi) to protect Earth. She gets the band back together Snow White (Parkinson), Red Riding Hood (Elizabeth Eileen ), and Sleeping Beauty (Marah Fairclough) who, as the last name implies, has her own interest in the Prince. To stop them from meddling with her plans Magda sends them through a time portal. And well not very much. There happens to be a lot of wandering around in what must be rampant padding to feature length. To give one example, Sleepy gets captured and stuck in a glass case. A condition that viewers will certainly empathize with. While from the first movie Rumpelstiltskin makes his return, he’s played by a different actor this time.
That replacement alone serves as a strong indicator that The Asylum was seemingly unable to afford Casper Van Dien and settled for a cheaper, generic alternative. To make matters worse, Prince Charming is black and wears a poorly executed British accent. One of these was extremely offensive to me.
The primary attraction of the original was the princess types, figuratively busting through the screen and being D-grade action heroes which, let’s face it, is what they do here but in very scattered bursts. For instance, Red still has her bow, but now she uses it on one or two occasions so that it is nothing more than a token gesture. Whoever did the fight choreography here bears a certain amount of responsibility: at best, it is barely passable, and at worst, it is often pathetic. I don’t remember the predecessor being quite this bad in this aspect, although the mists of time are certainly working in its favor. Both knew that while Avengers Grimm was painfully low-budget and a blatant cash grab, its insanity would be entertaining enough. Time Wars is simply low-budget and a cash grab. As such, like our other recent Asylum review, Tomb Invader, it probably has more in common with them. Most importantly, in that, both managed to put me to sleep during the most tedious parts.
