At first, the movie portrays a poker scene Jonah (Jonas Chernick), a compulsive gambler, is currently fighting his greatest battle a huge loan he has taken out that just keeps getting larger in size. Refusing to back down, Jonah claims he can sort this out in one go. Unfortunately for him, the hand that was dealt does not favour him. By the night’s end, Jonah needs money, and lots of it, which is exactly what his bookie is making clear to him. As soon as he realizes the terrible position he is in, he bolts out of the building and heads home because he will do whatever it takes to get the money.
While this is happening, Jonah’s daughter Aurora (Joey King) is at the doctor’s office getting her eyes checked and the doctor suggests that she will go completely blind in a month, maximum. As for Jonah, he gives zero thought seeing how much of a loser his father is. However, Jonah has plans of his own, which involve a surprise road trip to Churchill in order to see the Northern Lights. Perfect, right? Unfortunately, he is too afraid to admit that his daughter is blind, so instead, he uses the lights as a ‘cool’ distraction to help her forget the painful reality of her situation.
Aurora unacceptably refuses and states how she thinks her name is enough punishment, then walks off, she does not prefer spending the night with her friends as it doesn’t work out due to her getting ridiculously embarrassed because of how far-sighted she is. Jonah attempts to ask his girlfriend Kyla if she can lend him some money, but in response, she does not give him the money. And Mr. Dishonest himself does try to explain his situation and uses the excuse of home repair fixes, which makes Kyla doubtful. Kyla does offer some advice which is for Jonah to spend time with Aurora.
When the bookies decide to pay him a visit after Kyla leaves, it is no secret that he is broke. So as expected, the bookies barge in and take anything they consider of use to pay off the debt. Sadly for Jonah, selling his valuables to try cover the debt is not going to workout, So like any reasonable person would, he suggests replacing it with some home renovations. The bookies take a more realistic approach and tell Jonah that they want to see some action if he wants to pay half of the debt in 12 hours. No doubt things would end in violence. Assuming. When Aurora gets home she nicely puts her pet away, claiming that taking her records and laptop is ridiculous, and with that, aurora goes wild and storms out, unwilling to listen to Jonah tell his story. He rushes to her side to tell her of the fantastic Northern Lights. Which, as luck would have it, is his way of avoiding issues with the bookie. After a few initial guidelines, the strangest outlandish adventure commences.
This movie was hilarious and entertaining to watch. It was funny watching them bond during their road trip while being chased by the mafia. I felt I could see Aurora’s perspective when she was blind, and the late night shots were beautiful. There is no shortage of jokes in this interesting movie, from strange lowlifes to gambling with little luck. It proves that road trips, challenging or not, can be enjoyable while bonding.
