Zoya Lowe’s chest is slowly being ravaged by a blackhole, and as a result, she has a single week left to live. However, when that end comes, Zoya inexplicably finds herself waking up in a hospital. Now stuck in a quantum loop, Zoya is left to relive her death day after day, always teetering on the edge of death.

Omni Loop is the title of Bernardo Britto’s new film, who was previously known for Jacqueline Argentine. Britto’s new film, described as a science fiction, adds yet another film to the subgenre of time loops alongside Happy Death Day and Palm Springs. But it doesn’t take long to realize Zoya, played by the ever talent Mary-Louise Parker, is no longer restricted by time and comes to face the harsh truths regarding her past lives, sacrifices, and her role within the grand scheme of life.

“Something tells me you are going to do incredible things one day,” says an offscreen narrator as Zoya watches herself in the mirror during her younger years. “You are bound to change the world.” Now in her fifties, Zoya carries a quiet resentment. Her life as a writer for a snooze-inducing science textbook doesn’t help, especially when combined with her former reputation as a scientist. Deciding to get married and raise a daughter effectively ended Zoya’s career as a physicist decades ago. Now that Zoya’s eternal week is nearly at an end, the frustration over her situation morphs her on-going preoccupation into swimming instead. Quite conveniently, Zoya breaks her routine and runs into Paula (Ayo Edebiri), a student who is reading Zoya’s textbook on quantum mechanics. Zoya and Paula, who have seemingly infinite free time, set out to literally accomplish the near-impossible task of “solving time travel,” and reverse Zoya’s decision to settle down.

With Emmy award winners Parker (HBO’s Angels in America) and Edebiri (FX on Hulu’s The Bear) onboard, Omni Loop succeeds in capturing lightning in a bottle: two generations of great actresses that deliver soul-stirring, deeply pensive performances. As character foils – Edebiri’s Paula resembles the plucky young academic Parker’s Zoya once strived to be. The two women complement one another in a way that is graceful and understatedly humorous. One standout scene in the second act shows the pair, in what can only be described as revealing their past choices opposite each other, contemplating the ramifications of them, resulting in tears from the audience.

Britto’s sarcophagus is simultaneously his sci fi drama, annihilating and healing the proverbial heartstrings in true life affirming fashion. For anyone that questions the long term impacts of major life decisions which is to say, everyone with a pulse Omni Loop seeks to uncover the venture as potentially futile. In order to think to consider what might have been is to blind oneself to the one aspect of life that is worth pondering over: the relationships, existing in the right in the front of us.
