If you have to pick one standout quality of Wendell Pierce, it is his earnestness. He has garnered the reputation of a veteran having acted in popular television shows like The Wire, Treme, and Suits, and it is evident that he has never faltered at projecting a false note, whether it be low comedy or high drama. However, even his high degree of competence is not enough for him to save Tim Rouhana’s wildly over sentimental film, One Last Thing. It is currently playing in about 700 theaters across the nation and it truly deserves its not so flattering marketing as, “A Chicken Soup for the Soul Event.”
Even for a drama, the story of which revolves Pierce, now, that is a real positive. In this, he is given the hilarious billing of Dylan Derringer, an Orlando based dentist. He is quite simply, a dashing, lonely man. A man so lonely, that he has no friends or people close to him to even play a round of golf with, which is his favorite hobby.
Hence, it is easy to comprehend the initial glee that Dylan claimed to have felt when a private investigator informed him that he is finally close to finding the daughter he has been searching for 25 years. That joy, however, would soon dissipate because whatever little courage he did have, instantly vanished the moment he set foot in Brooklyn. To make matters worse, he also began stalking his daughter, Lucy Smollett-Bell.
In the process, Dylan learns that his daughter has taken to coffee, has a babysitter, and goes to a bookstore. Plus, he stalks her to a hospital and is unable to ascertain the nature of the illness he believes she has, but does discover that her records show her father as ‘dead’.
In time, Lucy learns how to outsmart him and meets her stalker, who instead unveils the truth to her in an uncharacteristically blunt way, embarrassing himself. He easily understands why she is furious with him, given how not accepting of his proposition they had just been. However, she articulates her positive emotions towards him easily and sends him a letter after he moves back to Florida. This shift illustrates to us how drastically his life has changed after his golf career nose dived.
The twinkly type of film is often troubling. Lucy is in dire circumstances because she is diagnosed with a rare condition that needs immediate action. She is required to undergo kidney transplant surgery and Dylan is ready to assist. Which doesn’t please Jamie Froggatt, the gorgeous dental hygienist who has apparently developed a one-sided affection which begins to show. He is like no other that is around. To put it lightly, if you’d not figured it out up until this point, you need revision. Or you just haven’t been lucky in your selection of films. That’s right, Dylan managed to get the Green Light. Luke, his father, starts bleeding from the mouth, cluttering the place and coughing blood.
The moment one character ends up comatose, the other starts to rapidly answer an untranslatable question. Carved from rotten teeth, Dylan fills his bands with corroded, gold-plated teeth. So that he has an advantage over other dentists he becomes one of the richest, finest and most popular ones. Even he can accept that it’s disturbing. Add the logical perspectives to it, and . If someone is unbothered by contentment telling you that everything is okay just because someone is enjoying Thanksgiving turkey, then by far I’m sorry for them.
The film’s progress can be attributed to the efforts of Smollett Bell, who is charmingly genuine, while Pierce adds his superlative soulfulness to his otherwise subdued character. However, their brilliant efforts are not enough to lift the mediocre One Last Thing from its basic cable level veneer.
