The film ‘Sick Nurses’ is a Thai production co-directed by Piraphan Laoyont and Thodsapol Siriwiwat, who worked on Suicide Me. Piraphan Laoyont makes his feature film debut with this project. Along with Prachya Pinkaew, the production company behind Ong-Bak and Chocolate, Pinkaew also served as the co-director of Sick Nurses. I believe this is the company’s debut project in the horror genre.
Sick Nurses is a film that features a vengeful spirit and is centered around a group of doctors and nurses that commit murder for organs. The two main nurses are sisters and are oftentimes in disagreement when it comes to their mutual love for the doctor. One of the nurses decides to reveal their secret which leads the other nurses to kill her.
As with other horror stories, there is an element of supernatural here as well where in this case the spirit kills the nurses because they are responsible for the nurse’s death. After they are dead, the spirit is believed to go after the most loved person. She then becomes an angry ghost that kills in brutal and creative ways. The nurse in black with the dark powers goes on a spree of creatively brutal killing that is terrifying. During the journey, the dark side of the doctor’s past resurfaces, but it also does something dark.
Even from the start, Sick Nurses relied on and took inspiration from Gozu, Ringu , and Ju-on: The Grudge. This has made the film very reliant on stereotypes and references. The film does not take itself too seriously, as evidenced by a spirit placing a handbag on a nurses head. I found these aspects to be humorous, but I was unsure if I was supposed to be. This confusion was compounded by the inexperience of the actors, and so one of them encasing the other’s head in a bag did seem like a valid option. The doctors’ lack of experience made this an obvious choice. All of these things paired lead to lackluster acting. The narrative is also loosely knit together. The ‘doctor of the year’ award event, much like the Carrie movie, does not fit anywhere and serves only as a reference point. It makes me think whether the authors did not put in enough thought into the script. The nurses had an equally absurd explanation. All of them lived in a derelict hospital, which is almost as deserted as the one used in Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace.
Being a horror comedy is a very delicate balance, and this film did not strike it. It was unable to decide whether to focus on horror or comedy.
All the horror elements that you may expect in the finest of Asian cinema is nowhere close to this A Tale of Two Sisters it is not.
