A group of friends decide to go to a lake house for a weekend holiday. Their fun quickly turns into terror when they realize that there is a murderer on the loose.
I have to say as much as I love horror films, shot-on-video films have never topped my list of priorities. I tend to be very cynical and greatly prefer the crisp and modern look of most films. Having said that, I do give a select few the benefit of the doubt they need.
The movie Blood Lake possesses all of the essentials that make a great slasher film, A menacing score, an equally menacing killer, and a group of young people out to have fun. The cherry on top here is an original 80’s hard rock score by Steven Lee Robertson and Voyager. Fun times are bound to ensue.
Filmmaker Tim Boggs shot a low-budget slasher film over the weekend and managed to stay within the budget while keeping the quality up. Since they had a strict budget, it was only natural that the special effects, kill scenes and other components would be affected. Nonetheless, Boggs and his crew still managed to put together a decent body count with some impressive splatter effects.
When I pressed play on my newly acquired DVD of Blood Lake, I did not expect much considering how old the film is. Despite this, I was amazed at all of the performances throughout the entire 81-minute runtime of this indie film.
Except for two weaker performances, everyone gave it their all and did an amazing job portraying their characters. I loved the portrayal of Horndog Lil’ Tony by Travis Krasser.
Under normal circumstances, I would be extremely curled up in a ball at the sheer thought of watching the longest game of quarters ever filmed. Instead, watching the gang in in 1987 low-budget horror play was like observing one of my friends and their friends from a distance. I truly liked it!
The 80s has always been, and will continue to be, the golden age of horror for me and quite a few others. Blood Lake isn’t the best film to come out of the slasher subgenre, but it is certainly effective and fun to watch.
It has a funny and entertaining script and, most importantly, Tim Boggs made the film as a true independent which displayed complete control over the entire filmmaking process. The antagonist may not be My favorite killer like Jason or Michael, but his purple shirt and cowboy boots do happen to be one of the most memorable killer outfits.
So if you enjoy do-it-yourself horror from the 80s, do yourself a favor and check out Blood Lake. You won’t regret watching this shot-on-video gem, that is for sure.
