Allan Moyle. This name may not be significant to you, but where I work, at Mutant Reviewers, we always tend to half salute whenever he is mentioned in the hallway. While he may not be the biggest cheese wheel in the cult curd factory, Moyle is still responsible for the entertainment of Pump Up The Volume and Empire Records. While never really have broken into anything even remotely big, I’ve always wondered what he’s up to since the 90s, which, I’ve later found out, includes a Michael Jackson biopic and what may be his other cult flick Weirdsville.
On paper, Weirdsville has a familiar trope. Two stoner friends trying to outrun the troubles that seem to rear their ugly head at every turn, and while there isn’t any water, we can always take a toke on the bongs. I’ve watched this sort of thing being light and odd (Dude, Where is My Car), but Weirdsville kind of stumbles into darker routes.
Dexter and Royce, Toronto (if there is any?) drug users/dealers desperately trying to survive their worst night yet. Unable to repay their clothes stealing dealer, they decide to take matters into their own hands and go for the big score. The biggest obstacle is Matilda, the girl who knows how to open the store’s vault but dies from overdosing on the way, and with her, so do the scores. Badly let down, the once bold Royce and philosophical Dexter decide to dump her at a drive-in theater since their impulsive personalities wouldn’t be able to tolerate burying her and keeping their original plan set in stone.
It gets quite hot if you ask me, they were tucked in a drive-in so they had no idea what type of movie they were really in for. Spoiler alert, it’s major. This isn’t me overselling the plot, from my understanding it just gets worse.
Even though they tried, I suppose all criminals eventually pay the piper. Balancing the wrath of middle age satanist, their alter ego a short medieval man, and an exceptionally mad dealer was apparently one bridge too far. And the cherry on top? There’s been some additional violence, drugs and of course, a good’ kidnapping.
There is much to appreciate about Moyle He crafts compelling characters, deftly wields humor, and isn’t afraid to color outside the lines in his movies. However having drug addicted, especially pushers, as the lead characters makes it extremely hard for the audience to sympathize with the characters. The shift in tone from outlandish silliness to dark humor in Weirdsville denominates which audience will enjoy the film and which will not; while there are some instances that will tickle your funny bone, it makes for the curious sated without raising standards.Â
Weirdsville makes a plea for your attention instead of making a demand, and that is the shortcoming of the film. It sure is a box of mixed goodies and it didn’t attribute to the usual expectation.
