Many years ago, Ken Min was unable to stop his friend from murdering a young couple, which led to them leaving behind their baby in the world and being orphaned. With his friend getting arrested for being a criminal, Ken now has to live with the shame. In order to redeem himself, he opens a community youth center and teaches mixed martial arts. But when his sadistic friend is released from prison, life changes for Ken. So does when the orphaned boy enters his life. The moment Ken realizes that the chain of events put into motion is more than a mere coincidence, he is presented with two choices. A selfless act of heroism or embracing the instinct of self-preservation by running.
Ken Min, a hapkido instructor and a counselor in a local youth center, has a skeleton in his past that is set to release itself. One of his old criminal collaborators, Tokyo Joe, played by ex-wrestler and NFL player Bill Duff, has only revenge in his mind the moment he steps out of prison. Upon his release, Tokyo Joe sets out with a new crew to hatch the perfect plan of eliminating Ken, abducting his girlfriend, and establishing rule over the entire neighborhood. Ken, as always is more than ready to face the man he deceived. But the thing is, Ken is a completely different man from who he used to be. On the verge of a full-blown meltdown, not even Tokyo Joe, for all his arrogance, understands just how much of a martial arts expert Ken is. The unfortunate string of events sets off when Ken’s wife is kidnapped, forcing him to compete in an underground fighting tournament that offers little to no reward for the victor. Ken’s wife is forced to pay him in something he has harnessed deep down in his body and mind, defeating foes in front of a bloodthirsty crowd so eager for the devastation of the once skilled, refined warrior turned pacifist. What Ken didn’t expect was Tokyo Joe playing the Zoro of the modern era and totally gaming on Ken, relishing in his grand chance to mock and harass his adversary.
It is really interesting to see actor, writer, and director Jino Kang. He has only done one other film aside from this one, Blade Warrior, and you can definitely tell where he comes from as a writer and an action guy. He is not what most would consider a typical leading man, yet there is something cool and composed about him, and he certainly possesses undeniable skills as a fighter. I think a moviegoer who is older and more experienced in watching these types of films will appreciate him in the same manner as I do. It is a shame that he hasn’t produced a greater body of work. His next film was Weapon of Choice.
