While the film starts, relaxing music is played over beautiful nature views. It tells us that the year is 1755 and America was referred to as a land filled with opportunities for families to seek freedom of worship. Barbara Leininger and her family have just arrived in Pennsylvania. They have a cabin in the woods and her father is known to read from the family Bible. He reminds the family that during tests and trials, God will always be by your side.
As her mother and brother depart on a journey, a group of Indians invade their home resulting in catastrophic damages. Barbara and Regina run off to the forest where the Indians catch them. Barbara is now all alone and being taken captive, so she has to remind herself of her father’s words; that God will never leave her side. The Indians begin to mock her by putting dark paint over her skin and black paint over her brown hair. She wants to set herself free, but in the end opts to cooperate while hopelessly believing one day, she will be freed and reunited with her sister and her mother and brother. Years go by, she is grown into a woman, but faith still remains and she testifies to the Indian brave who wishes to marry her.
This film has it all! All the elements of a great film are intact. Music? Superb. Cinematography? Inspiring. Acting? Top notch. Last but not least, the direction and screenplay was done wonderfully. Kelly Greyson and Natalie Racoosin have portrayed the older and younger versions of Barbara wonderfully. Based on a true story from Tracy Leininger Craven’s novel, this film was sure to capture the audience’s eyes.
This film is well rounded comprising bits of drama, action, suspense and pretty nice conclusion. For the action lovers, there are numerous battle scenes and fights, including a good number of decapitations and deaths by tomahawk and muskets. Overwhelmingly, there is a lack of excessive blood and the scenes are not shocking. It seems that the director restrained enough violence so that family entertainment is possible without sacrificing the power of the story. This decision is commendable.
Without spoiling anything, Barbara is undeniably assured of God’s promise to never leave nor forsake her. The story covers theme of loyalty, perseverance, forgiveness and the everlasting love of God. That’s why, we are proud to give this movie five Doves, the best rating. It is amazing how watching this film is actually worth the time.
