The thriller Kandahar Break, an independent film directed by David Whitney, tackles themes of war and love. It is set in Afghanistan in 1999 and intertwined throughout are rich scenes of desperation and loneliness, similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. The regions are dry and terrifying emphasizing the pre-9/11 world. As the story progresses, the world becomes more complex while uncovering humanity’s fear of Afghanistan. While Whitney depicts a romance that seems foreign, it ultimately resembles the fears that the world faced during that time.
Richard Lee, a British engineer, attempts to locate and demolish land mines in Afghanistan, but he finds himself working alongside the Taliban. He soon discovers that the Afghani women are much more complex than he could imagine. Richard falls in love with Jamilah, a female Afghani interpreter, who has secretly suffered under Taliban rule. But to make matters worse, they are hunted by a merciless, old Afghan warrior.
The ethical questions around a company like Genco, which does mine clearance for the Taliban, and the risks of doing such business are equally perplexing, as are the logistics of conducting trade in a country where one can get shot for urinating in the wrong place. Interspersed throughout the film are scenes of negotiations between English firers and tribal chieftains where betrayal seems to be just a heartbeat away. It is too harsh to reveal the tightly knitted plot. What I can say, though, is that the movie Kandahar Break makes every moment of the film heart-wrenching and increases your edge-of-your-seat engagement with your jaw clenched the whole time. The tiny violent skirmishes make you feel the confusion one would endure while battling, creating an exhilarating heart-pounding experience. Unlike, say, Syriana, Kandahar Break is a compact thriller; its plot is also easy to follow which contributes to the emotional immersion with the characters instead of getting lost in the convoluted web of “what the heck is happening”.
Sadly, the thrills and risks that were associated with Kandahar Break lay beyond where the plot was set. Shooting this film in Pakistan had its own set of dangers. A publicist once sent me a press handout which stated,
