Michael Welch (Twilight) is cast to portray Denny in The Asylum’s Born Bad. Denny is someone that parents will adore, but once you get to know him closely, he seems to become a murderous psychopath. Brooke Duncan has recently moved into the area and like every other rebellious high school senior who despises her new stepmother it’s only natural for her to want to go wild. Therefore, she goes out to party with a friend despite being technically grounded. That is where she meets Denny, who is such a nice guy that he manages to charm her father and stepmother as well. Had she seen the opening scene where Denny is shown to have gruesomely murdered an innocent young girl, she would have been shocked. Unfortunately for her, she did not (and in all likelihood, skipped that part in the script too) and instead brings home her psycho boyfriend, who just so happens to terrorize her family. This highlights the dangers that come with overly impressionable teenage minds and the insane personas that are able to capture them.
Honestly, the movie is horribly entertaining. Michael Welch is unbelievably frightening in his portrayal as the shapeshifting, thieving, psychotic drifter Denny. Whenever he explodes with rage, it is terrifying because he seems to be crazily angry. On more than one occasion, I thought Welch was going to have a stroke or attempt bursting a vein. Bonnie Dennison does a nice job as the wide-eyed Brooke who is portrayed as a simple naive girl. Several people who comment on this movie on the net are saying that Denny and Brooke’s romance did not make sense. Nay nay, they are wrong. Dennison plays the character’s naivety an inch behind desperate so that anyone who pushes can get in, which is exactly what Denny Does. She wants to reach out to someone and escape her family, this is reality and this is how it happens in real life and it does (maybe doesn’t to you, which if you are a parent of a teenage girl and find this romance stupid you should be jumping for joy). To a certain extent, I’ll concede, that she did give up her purity way too hastily.
The final cast member is Meredith Monroe (Dawson’s Creek, and Criminal Minds) as Katherine Duncan. Katherine will accept lip service from her stepdaughter, but won’t tolerate abuse from her useless boyfriend. David Chokachi (Baywatch) as Walter Duncan is a credible loving father. He is easily persuaded because he wants his daughter to marry a nice guy. Parker Coppin performs well as Kyles, Brookes’s little brother, but does not do much to stand out with such a limited role. This serves as a lesson to younger siblings with older sisters. The best option is being sent away to boarding school, so you don’t have to endure her boyfriend’s attempt at robbing and murdering your family. I’d also like to commend Donnabella Mortel, who had dirt thrown in her face while being buried. It makes her corpse look that much more realistically dead (if that makes any sense). Filmmakers usually avoid these sorts of things, deciding to cover the corpse first and then cut away. I guess if you’re working for The Asylum, you have to be ready for action.
