This was the fourth Mega Shark movie made by The Asylum. The series started with Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus (2009), which was a moderate success and showed that there was a market for monster movies with silly mash-up names. It also became the first of The Asylum’s gonzo shark films, a craze that would reach its peak with Sharknado (2013) and its sequels. The Asylum also did three more Mega Shark sequels, beginning with Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurs (2010) and Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark (2014). Then they did Mega Shark vs Kolossus here.
Mega Shark vs Kolossus was the second installment of the Mega Shark Series after The Asylum’s cult classic Sharknado. With the success of Sharknado, The Asylum sought to cash in on their popularity and restructured the Mega Shark series to align with Sharknado. At this point, it is evident that the same absurd wackiness that powered Sharknado has been running rampant in the Mega Shark series Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark was heading in that direction but with Mega Shark vs Kolossus, they get the balance just right, and create the most entertaining entry of the series to date. It’s also the most entertaining film we have had yet from Christopher Douglas-Olen Ray (see below for Christopher’s other films).
The effects are satisfactory given the Asylum’s reputation for lame cut-ups on their effects budgets. There are some great entertaining shots of the mega shark swatting battleships like crazy and one spectacular shot where the shark leaps right out of the water and chomps on Illeana Douglas’s speedboat. The real fun begins at the climatic finale with Kolossus capturing fighter planes and smashing them in his hands, then tossing the mega shark into space so he can blast it with a laser from his satellite, only for the satellite to miss and start searching The Moon.
At times, The Asylum’s films contain pretty controversial politics. It is reasonable that you don’t take them so seriously. Check out how Megalodon (2018) came out, overzealous in its salute, as it feigned nostalgia for the Cold War with the United States and its ‘fight’ against the evil Russians. The same thing is happening here with the question of what to do when a mega shark gets angry while battling a soviet Kolossus robot and proceeds to get wrapped up in an American flag. Perhaps one can think of Mega Shark vs Kolossus as a parody of what could be considered the killer shark genre’s version of the battle between Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren in Rocky IV (1985), where the contest between the two gargantuan figures was made symbolic of a political conflict between the divided East and West.
One of the movie’s more eccentric casting choices is ‘Illeana Douglas.’ The teenage pop star Debbie Gibson in the earlier Mega Shark movie was heavily stunt cast to provide some novelty, and the same things happened in a few more films. Since the 1980s, Illeana has had an established career with indie films, and she was also a long-time girlfriend of Martin Scorsese. It’s a mystery why she has never dabbled in B movies before. She is amazing in the role, and at fifty years old, she looks incredibly foxy, and she gives the role much more than it deserves.
It was Fred Olen Ray’s son, Christopher Douglas-Olen Ray, who directed the movie. He was known for making low-budget, exploitation films. After working as an assistant director on his father’s films, Christopher began his own career in directing. He produced various films for The Asylum and went on to direct Reptisaurus (2009), Megaconda (2010), Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurs (2010), Almighty Thor (2011), Shark Week (2012), 2-Headed Shark Attack (2012), Asteroid vs. Earth (2014), A House is Not a Home (2015), 3 Headed Shark Attack (2015), Circus Kane (2017), Minutes to Midnight (2018), Methgator (2023), Top Gunner: Battle of the Atlantic (2023), and War of the Worlds: Extinction (2024).
