It’s safe to say that on numerous occasions we have come across the novel ‘The Invisible Man’ by H. G. Wells in the format of movies as well as TV Shows. However, the existence of yet another film adaptation seemed to stir some doubt about the originality of the story. Truthfully speaking, there exists a duality in this opinion, and what needs to be determined is if the audience is met with a reasonable reenactment of the timeless classic. The first point to discuss is thag unlike most new adaptations, this movie does set itself in the Victorian age of the book and to some this may seem to be a sensible thing, for no one wishes to see a woke reinterpretation.

The film begins with a scene where a man gets killed by a supernatural force – and then we see Griffin (played by Mike Beckingham) racing against time to finish his experiment. Griffin’s landlord and a bailiff are pounding on the door and ready to evict him, so he franticly kicks the door open and injects himself with the experimental substance. In a mind-blowing sequence, Griffin’s flesh and bones disappear. Although the movie is low-budget, this particular scene is the highlight of the film. As Griffin escapes, an explosion kills the landlord and the bailiff, along with destroying his lab.

While this happens, Adeline (portrayed by Mhairi Calvey) in disbelief starts reading about a series of crimes allegedly caused by an invisible man. After the death of her husband, she finds herself in a difficult spot trying to pay the bills and keep the manor, which is why she disbelieves the claims.

Imagine her surprise when Griffin, her former classmate, is revealed to be injured and hiding at her house. Imagine further surprise when she realizes he is invisible. He needs her help with retrieving a few things, including his journal from a homeless man by the name of Marvel (played by Grahame Fox) who Griffin had forced to assist him. However, Marvel is now missing with the notes and money Griffin gave him.

As I mention very briefly, this is a low budget film. Like many people, when I hear of a low budget film and the filmmaker is going to tell an old story, I roll my eyes. But wait. This is actually a rather good film. True, the story is over a century old, but that scene at practically the start of the series where Griffin injects himself and we slowly watch as his skin, muscles, and everything else disappear was so riveting it had me hooked.

There are many aspects of the film that are similar to H.G Wells’s novel though there are some differences, for instance Kemp now has a female counterpart, Adeline Kemp, who can serve as a love interest. But the mine is the same. A man turns invisible and gradually becomes insane. Personally I found the film more focused on Adeline, and how she is coping with not only her situation that makes her want to assist Griffin but then also her eventual realization of the dire situation that she needs to resolve.

Considering the modest budget, the majority of the scenes that include Griffin are shot at night and while this approach is understandable, in that, it conceals any imperfections in the special effects, I wish some more scenes with Griffin were filmed during the day.

The actress keeping the movie together is Mhairi Calvey. Star of the film as she is the only one you can see on screen, the same goes for Mike Beckingham, but for rather obvious reasons, he is primarily a voice actor in the film. That being said, he does turn up at the very start and very end. I like his voice and cadence while he does a good job portraying Griffin too.
