Before I start my review, let me link you to my review of one of their films, Amityville Haunting, to prove that I indeed do not work for The Asylum. I gave it a merciless rating of 2 out of 10.
I’m on The Asylum’s official mailing list, so I base my reviews on my sincere experience of every film they send to me. A person working for the company would never rate a film as low as me. That said, The Asylum does put in the effort and I respect them for that. They are given restrictive budgets alongside a two-week shooting period and are forced to work with a lot of amateur actors.
The lawsuit regarding the jaw-droppingly famous Battleship movie had their share of fame and controversy and The Asylum had to rename their film American Battleship to American Warships.
Moving on to the Review, as SyFy shows the film on Saturday night May 19th at 9 pm EST, I have kept it short to not spoil the important plot points.
American Warships takes a step in modern military technology for The Asylum, the CGI is good for a low-budget film like this one, but is far from distracting. In my defence, this is a lower budget than most temples of cinema, where 80s technology magi come close to shredding pieces together and animating them into a grotesque scream of motion that is painfully indisputable.
The acting was good enough, it’s not winning any awards, but Mario Van Peebles (as Capt. Winston), Carl Weathers (General McKraken), and Johanna Watts (LT Bradley) all perform well enough for their parts. Quite frankly I am a white male but still, it is refreshing to see a multi-ethnic cast as industrial films tend to be very dull. Ashame to see the two out-of-use veteran actors in action, even though they kick ass while ageing.
The basic premise is the same as the big-budget version of the film, Aliens and the Navy fighting them, are featured alongside Wilmington NC which was substituted as the filming set due to limited availability. Regardless of what went down during the shooting, the film ended up being more entertaining than I anticipated.
In the end, American Warships is a 7 out of 10 for me. Solid effort and worth watching. Sure, there are a few background glitches and problems, but just watch it! And also watch the big budget version with an estimated 1,000 times the budget! Both these films can, and should, coexist. American Battleships proves that independent filmmakers can put out a very watchable product.
