I don’t know how familiar you are with the Double Dragon video games but, trust me when I say this, the storylines were far from rich. They featured two brothers who ran from left to right while throwing punches and kicks, and that’s pretty much it. Having said that, I can only imagine that when movie executives decided to convert this game into a film, they had almost unlimited creative freedom to concoct a good storyline. The most sensible option would have been creating a modern-day martial arts drama with great fight sequences and call it a day.
However, the Double Dragon film we got chose, “Forget THAT!” and decided to go in a very bizarre and weird direction. To begin with, it takes place in the year 2007, during a post-apocalyptic future, where chaos reigns because earthquakes, increased sea levels, acid rain and (as stated by a weatherman’s map) nuclear blasts, have completely changed Los Angeles into an island city known as New Angeles. The city has a lot of theme-based gangs that rule the streets after dark, advanced automobiles, fighting clubs, Andy Dick, and aboslutely no guns which makes it very similar to an urban version of mad max.
My respect goes to this film for deeply committing to its world, as opposed to only paying it lip service with a single reference and one flaming trash barrel. Just about every scene in this movie is accompanied by context that is absurd and strange, and it is clear that a great deal of effort has gone into constructing it. For example, in the middle of a boat chase, the jet skis skirt above and beneath the highway underpasses, which are now distinctly submerged. I have watched so many futuristic worlds from 1990s cinema, and it seems that I have seen everything from Demolition Man to Judge Dredd, I do need to state that Double Dragon is one of the most complete worlds I have come across.
The story are gonna make your head spin and twist and turn and whatever you think cannot be done, well buckle up and wait till you read this part. Meet the exceptionally gifted brother-sister duo, Jimmy and Billy who along with their sister live a comfortable life until one day when they are prophesied to be the owners of an amulet ( the Double Dragon). They are also being chased by a villain by the name of Shuko (played by Robert Patrick from Terminator 2) whose aim is to turn the brothers into shadow monsters in an attempt to take control over them. If I had to guess, which I do not want to do, but if I had to, life has some crazy twists waiting for all of us to just open the box.
