I will admit I have missed this action film in the past, however, Blood and Bone is one of those films I would never forget missing. Not because of how bad the movie is but because it is an incredible action film. The fighting scenes in this movie are exceptional, so much so I had to rewind and play them again. It does have its shortcomings but every martial arts admirer should see this film.
The very first scene introduces everyon to Bone (Michael Jai White) fighting off a bunch of low lives trying to mug him in a prison toilet. He does so by completely dismantling them in an amazing fight choreography that gets your heart beating. That is far from the only amazing scene from this movie as it continues to get better.
After being released from jail, Bone moves into a room that is for rent belonging to Tamara (Nona Gaye). He begins to work his worth up the underground street fighting scene with the help of his manager Pinball (Dante Basco). The protagonist might seem to have a somewhat good personality, but he craves to become a better street fighter for a motive which is explained later in the movie.
Michael Jai White portrays Bone, who seems as invincible as he really is. The fight scenes are incredibly choreographed and violent Blood and Bone is absolutely a testosterone-saturated film, and fans of ‘old school’ action movies will enjoy it! As good as the direction and the acting are, which is better than most films of this kind, the screenplay does disappoint a bit Bone could have one so much cooler with a few witty one-liners. He is built like he has been forged out of pure steel He fears no one, he can box, do martial arts, and is a master swordsman, yet there is still something missing, and for me, it’s the witty comebacks. There is usually at least one action line in every film that makes you think, I wish I could be that cool, but oddly not in Blood and Bone. And I was left with wanting.
Blood & Bone has enough to keep admirers of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, and Steven Seagal occupied. Michael Jai White is as much an action hero as they come and fight scenes are as good as they come. This movie kicks ass! I’d love to see what he could do with a well-written script, but even without it, this movie and he kicks ass.
