When it comes to humongous monster films, I have to admit I am not a fan. I wouldn’t call this one a great film either, but I do enjoy Octopi, and it was that spirit that made this a bit more palatable for me, even though the creature has a very limited range of attacking abilities.

In summary, the conclusion I have come to is that the reason I am personally not as enamored with this type of movie is because of how much attention it gives. And I say this because, in the context of this film, the entirety of the United States Navy seems to be aware of the creature, not to mention a considerable part of the military and, of course, the general populace. I mean, a lot of people are aware of it. In slashers, the murderer may be stalking quite a handful of people, but in these types of films, everything is open and public.

Whether watching Them!, In the Black Scorpion, The Giant Claw, or The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, one thing is constant the creature is always destroyed by the combined effort of the military and scientists. This is so monotonous and despite the special effects or type of creature listening involved, it does not change. In addition, most of these films add romantic subplots, which, when done, do not have any significant impact.

In this particular movie, I shall concede that the romantic subplot was at most a confused love triangle, so it was a bit different, and believe it or not, I tended to like Faith Domergue’s character. However, the point still remains that trying to include a love angle does not improve the movie or even the characters in question.

Of the three Casts, my personal favorite has to be Faith Domergue (Cult of the Cobra, The House of Seven Corpses, This Island Earth). Yes, she was my favorite actress in the movie, but beyond that, she had the most potential out of everyone. Kenneth Tobey (The Thing from Another World, The Vampire) was literally just a bland army man and Donald Curtis (Earth vs. the Flying Saucers) was fine, but I feel like I never really got a good feel for the character.

I also really like cephalopods, I think to an extent, it’s the tentacles that I am attracted to. It also means that as much as I enjoyed it, I felt terrible for the things people did to it, especially when the poor sentient being had no choice but to seek out a different dietary range. In my opinion, the most depressing was the flamethrowers certainly that scene was epic, but in my estimate, it was equally as heartless to the poor creature.

Alongside good-looking sequences, the attack of the octopus on the Golden Gate Bridge is an example of one such fun-looking scene. I have not yet been to San Francisco, but I imagine that if I were, and chanced a sight of a gigantic octopus terrorizing a famous bridge, then that would definitely make for an unforgettable holiday.

In summary, It Came from Beneath the Sea was an average experience. For the most part, this is how I feel about these giant monster movies they just aren’t very appealing to me. It was an okay watch, and it is a good movie overall, but it is not one that I think I will watch frequently in the coming years.
