400 Days shifts its focus to the four astronauts locked in a spaceship as they conduct a psychological experiment on deep space travel. The crew slowly gets conditioned to life inside the spaceship, but things take a wrong turn when they lose communication with the outside world. This was supposed to be just a simulated mission, but once they start to get out of the ship, the astronauts slowly uncover the reality.

I was very anticipating this movie. For a long time, blending horror and science fiction has been one of my favorite sub-genres to watch, which is why I had high hopes for 400 days. From the trailers I watched and the posts I read, this portrayal seemed like something I could sink my teeth into. Generally, I try to avoid this, but the movie was so one-of-a-kind that I was entertained from the very first scene until the last one. I must commend writer/director Matt Osterman for attempting to create something new.

I was also surprised and heard the same question in my mind. How is a movie about four astronauts on a mission gone to hell a fresh story? The simple answer is that the movie is not actually about that. The synopsis is a little jumbled, but I get why they did it in the first place. It stars Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Ben Feldman, and Dane Cook as our four heroes (with Cook being more of the anti-hero) who are locked away on a test mission to see the effects that space travel has on the human body and mind. Some things begin to go wrong a couple of days in, but the crew is able to manage the trouble quite skillfully, as they have been trained. It turns out they believe it’s just part of the test.

Was it? Miscommunication and an unusual sequence of events led our heroes out of their shuttle. So the movie really does take a sharp turn. I do not want to spoil anything, so I’m going to keep the details to myself, but the movie’s plot twist and unanswered questions made it really fun to watch. It was very well cast and while the characters felt one-dimensional, those actors did a convincing job. I successfully hated Cook’s character, which meant he did a good job. Cook was also an executive producer on the project so I’m sure he put much effort into the role. Brandon Routh and Caity Lotz of superhero fame did well together as the awkward ex-couple, and Feldman did as the stereotype nerd mild-mannered.

Not something that is going to be remembered for years to come. All in all, it was far from great but original enough to be considered good. Most importantly, the movie was entertaining. I’d recommend it to those that like sci-fi-themed thrillers or post-apocalyptic horrors. If you missed our first article, catch the trailer below.
