I did not know English very well, so I was extremely pleased to find “22 Bullets,” starring my beloved Jean Reno, the French macaron of modern cinema. What a treat it was to hear him speak in French and English with such an elegant French accent!
Let alone how lovely it was to understand that “Ronin” “The Professional,” “Cold Blood,” or the beautifully tranquil and hidden gem “The Big Blue;” would all be available at my fingertips.
He so happens also be skilled in portraying comedy as well, which is a true buried treasure to discover.
“22 Bullets is a movie that came out in France in 2010 and made its way to North America in 2013, having exploded as a best seller. It is pretty solid what you expect from a revenge thriller; plenty of blood, some bloody shoot-outs, a chase sequence that’s hair-raising, and even some truly whiz-bang editing.”
Looking at the credits, it is not a shock that “dialogue” needed more help. When this bad guy is promising the gang that attempted to kill him (which is worth 22 bullets), I am going to let you imagine Reno saying it with a French accent, while I assume it is translated in English subtitles. He has ambushed the would-be assassins who he justifiably claims disregarded the protocols of an “assassination,” and decided to murder instead.
“Charly Mattei, and I’m here to kill you. Out in the open. It’s a matter of respect. I want you to know who kills you. Why you die.
“Murder doesn’t take place in the hood. You just don’t kill someone, you send a message,” Levin said.
“Each one of you will die for my pleasure, one by one, but not right now. I want you to consciously suffer for all your actions. You will pray for my mercy and beg your wife and little kids to grant you forgiveness,”
“I will anticipate your death and spend the next six months or a year planning how it will unfold,”
“And you will be right, but you will never be safe again as long as I walk this earth.”
With a single statement, an already sadistic character was armed with a terrifying threat.
