If you happen to be in Chicago and require the services of a driver for, let us say, dubious work, provided you’re ready to pay, then look no further than the Bean Bandit. Known now for his efficient “courier” work, he has acquired both a reputation for being the best in the business and a target for the authorities. Whatever the job is, be it big or involving high levels of risk, as long as it is legal, neither he nor his dazzlingly skilled partner, Rally Vincent, will shy away from it. The Road Buster will ensure no one comes close to him.
When Bean assists an intricate heist on the mall, he and Rally are recruited into a terrifying kidnapping scheme set by a businessman to abduct his daughter. The primary goal is to rescue his daughter before the local police mutter them, and in return, Bean and Rally plan to seize two million dollars from the ransom. It’s going to take everything they have to exact their revenge, save the girl, and put the local police at bay. With the variety of fast driving and wild chases, there’s a guarantee of mega chaos awaiting all parties involved.
If I’m honest, my first impression of the show was positive due to what I have read from different sources. Despite the expectations being there, they were not completely met. This was the case with what I experienced as well.
The animation and the art allow Chicago to be viewed from a unique perspective, the animation captures the chaos perfectly. With Unrealistic but cool stunts, the aim is to replicate Bean’s wild driving in the hope of replicating it, looking at the action and chase scenes, with this being true, one has to marvel at how much preparation is needed. The soundtrack on the other hand is pretty standard, it gets the job done with driving rock beats sprinkled within it. Rather monotonous than the chase scenes and action.
The characters are quite intriguing as well. Those who paid attention to Gunsmith Cats should have no trouble identifying with Kenichi Sonoda’s characters since he had to abandon Bean in order to make Gunsmith Cats because of a contract problem. It is bordering on inaccurate to say that the dubbing is terrible by AnimEigo standards, with Bean sounding as much the Bandit he is. There are bits of borderline sick humor sprinkled around the film to ensure the audience does not take it seriously.
The storyline which served basically as a cover for the action to occur was actually quite pleasant, it had us mostly on the edge of our seats. The film, however, went way too over the edge in terms of decency and believability during the last battle. As the credits rolled, T.H.E.M. tried to fathom why. It had the feeling of being an excellent ending for an action thriller movie that is full of fights but came down to a tiresome generic showdown where, guess what, the writers had no more plans for our charming rogue from Chicago.
But overall, it was not too terrible. As an action movie, Bean lives up to his word, and you will get some excellent clips from it. Still, you have to ponder if it could have been done differently.
